"Pin It" Button FAQ & Troubleshooting

The "Pin It" button is not showing up properly (or it shows up, but clicking isn't working). What can I do?

Here are some things to try. After each one re-test a few posts or pages on your site to see if it's fixed.

  • Make sure you've updated to the most current version of the plugin.
  • Clear your browser cache, log out/log in, test in a different browser.
  • If using any WordPress caching plugin, please empty/clear it (examples: W3 Total Cache, WP-Cache and WP SuperCache).
  • Disable other Pinterest-related plugins being used.
  • Test for theme or plugin conflicts (see below).

Testing for Theme Conflicts

  1. Activate a "stock" WordPress theme such as Twenty-Eleven, Twenty-Twelve or Twenty-Thirteen.
  2. Check to see if the issue still occurs.

If the issue does not occur after having activated the default "Twenty" theme, your theme is causing a conflict with the "Pin It" Button plugin.

If the issue continues to occur, you should then test for plugin conflicts.

If you have scripts, ads or other social sharing features embedded in text/HTML widgets, you may also need to temporarily disable them as they also might be causing conflicts.

Testing for Plugin Conflicts

  1. Deactivate ALL plugins.
  2. Activate the "Pin It" Button plugin.
  3. Check to see if the issue occurs.

If the issue does not occur, one (or more) of your plugins is causing a conflict with the "Pin It" Button Plugin. To determine which plugin(s) is causing the conflict, follow these steps:

  1. Activate each plugin one by one.
  2. Check to see if the issue occurs after each plugin is activated.

Known plugin conflicts

  • W3 Total Cache: Make sure JS Minify is disabled.
  • Google Analytics for WordPress: Try unchecking one or both of these options: 1) Track outbound clicks & downloads, 2) Check Advanced Settings, then make sure "Track outbound clicks as pageviews" is un-checked.

Known theme conflicts

  • Your theme must implement wp_footer() in the footer.php file, otherwise JavaScript will not load correctly. You can test if this is the issue by switching to a stock theme temporarily or by installing and running the Theme Check plugin.
  • If your theme is incompatible, update it, switch or try this workaround. (updated 10/9/2012).

Pin Counts do not seem correct.

How do I display the button in places other than above or below the content (i.e. use a shortcode)?

  • Use the shortcode [pinit] to display the button within content.
  • Use the function <?php echo do_shortcode('[pinit]'); ?> to display within template or theme files.
  • More shortcode instructions in the "Pin It" Button settings in your WordPress admin.

How do I get the "Pin It" button to line up next to my other social sharing buttons?

  • Add custom CSS on the settings screen and optionally remove the surrounding <div> tag or...
  • Upgrade to the Pro version which includes some other social sharing buttons.

I had an old version of the "Lite" (free) plugin that worked and now it doesn't. Can I get it back?

  • Yes, you can download previous versions here.
  • You'll need to deactivate and delete the current plugin, then go to Plugins > Add New > Upload to upload the zip file to your site.

I had the old version of pin it and it worked fine.  I moved my blog to a new sever and it stopped showing up. It would show up when it first loaded but then disappear.  I updated the app and activated it and now all of my pinterest counts are gone and it doesn't even show zero. It just shows nothing beside the pin it button and this very disappointing.  Why? and how can I get my counts back?

Hi Veronica,

I did something similar a while back - and in so doing i reset the pin counts. That is what it sounds like to me now when you describe that you 'activated it' and now the pin counts are gone -
There is nothing next to the pin button until something has been pinned again and to my knowledge there is no way to get the old counts back.
I did it on when I had some posts I had pin counts  in the thousands - (ugh)

I just posted an explanation of what I've learned about pin counts and how they are tracked. Please look it over and feel free to submit a support request or comment there if you're still experiencing issues.

Sorry that doesn't help me.  I've just paid to upgrade and bought your $29 plug in and it can't be installed. I download it from the email but it's not a zip file. It's a folder with a bunch of files, which cannot be uploaded in wordpress as it will only accept zip files.  Reinstalling pin it just reinstalls the lite on my site which obviously doesn't work and doesn't show any pin counts now like I said. Very frustrated your plug in doesn't work and now i've paid for it.

Veronica, in some cases simply clicking on zip file links doesn't download them properly. If you're using Safari on a Mac or have zip files set to automatically extract, you may need to right-click and select "Save As..." to download the plugin zip file properly.

I'll also copy this to the support ticket you submitted.

OK got it installed finally. But the same problem the pin counts are not showing (which happened with the lite) but now the pinit button is also not working. Nothing happens when I click on them on any page. So I put that in the support ticket.

Hello, I just updated to the most current version of the plugin, and my pin it numbers no longer show up. Is this a bug with the latest version? Thanks!

It depends if you're using Lite or Pro. A updated summary and explanation of the current state of pin counts and how they're tracked and displayed can be found here:

I've upgraded to the most recent version, and now the Pin It button won't line up with my other buttons.  I'm sorry, I don't have the time or money to buy a pro plugin or change over from my existing social sharing plugin; I just need the Pin It button to line up.  In the previous version I used this:

.pin-it-btn-wrapper {
float: left;
padding-top: 7px;
margin-right: 2px;

That no longer works.   I would just go back to the previous version of PinIt, but it no longer works at all.   All I want is for the silly button to line up the way it did before.

Hi Suzanne. There were a few updates to the Lite version concerning CSS to be more flexible for users in general.

Could you first look over the upgrade notice here:

If you're still having issues at this point, could you post a new topic in the forums there with your website and CSS details?

How can I have the "Pin It" button show the title of my article instead of the description that is associated with the image? Thanks!

We don't have an option for this at the moment, but are considering adding it as a setting.

I assume you're talking about hover or below image pin it buttons. Regular "page-level" pin it buttons should use the post title be default.
